Abraham tells the people of Gerar that Sarah is his sister, the second time he’s made this claim about her. King Abimelech then takes her into his house, and that night G-d comes to him in a dream with a warning: return her, or die. Abimelech wakes up to find his bodily orifices sealed shut, and he asks Abraham “what have you done to us?”

That question opens into a teaching from Rabbi Eliyahu Dessler on emet and sheker, the two Hebrew words usually translated as truth and falsehood, and the cases where the honest thing to say isn’t the same as the accurate thing to say.
