Announcement from Dallas Kosher: Insects in the Barley

I found this in my cereal!

And just today Sharon Michaels called, “Rabbi, I found an insect in my barley. What should we do?”

If one finds only one insect before cooking, the entire unit/bag may not be used. It may be checked. This means every kernel needs to be inspected for insects. If, in the food cooked, one finds only one insect, the food may be eaten. If you find three insects in the cooked food, the food is forbidden.

PS: When I purchase barley, beans, and the as I place them in the freezer. Hopefully the hard freeze will kill the weevils, flour beetles, or meal moth larvae. I strongly recommend doing this throughout spring and summer.
